Help finishing a dining table?

I just got a dining table that came finished with only a hand rubbed oil finish. I would like to stain the top to match my chairs which are a deeper reddish brown. Would also like to apply several coats of something to seal it against other staining. Will the already oiled wood take on stains and sealers ok?
