Can you fake appendicitis?

My mate has a bad home life and she does things to get attention, she had enough of stuff at home and she pretended to start experiencing stomach cramps, she kept up the pretence for nearly 18 hours and they operated to remove her appendix.. Im just curious is there no way then that doctors can tell if your faking or not.. I mean surely the appendix swells or something?
